As the need for quick offsite recovery becomes more prevalent, more businesses require relatively up-to-date information in their disaster recovery centers. Many technologies claim to accomplish this task, but only a well-planned communications and storage infrastructure, combined with the proper data replication technologies, will meet the needs of the responsible organization. For more than ten years, Voyant Strategies has been successfully planning and implementing such infrastructures for companies of all sizes.
By combining technologies from Network Appliance and Riverbed Technology, Voyant is able to provide a high confidence of recoverability. Unlike many replication technologies that force you to recover from "crash consistent" copies of data in the disaster recovery center, NetApp's SnapMirror technology guarantees full consistency of the replica. Riverbed's Scalable Data Referencing technology enables the transfer of this data over relatively slow links, both lowering costs and enabling processes that were previously impossible to perform.
The following diagram depicts a typical disaster recovery topology based on Network Appliance and Riverbed Technology. Note how the entire solution resides within the Storage Layer of the IT infrastructure.
Primary storage on both NetApp Filers and standard servers is replication over the wide-area network to near-line storage in the disaster recovery facility. NetApp's NearStore near-line storage contains all the same features as the primary storage, making it simple to serve this data in the DR site when it becomes necessary. Riverbed Steelheads accelerate this replication by up to 60X over the WAN, minimizing the impact of replication traffic as well as keeping data more up-to-date in the remote site.
